Pickleball Team Building in Miami: How to Plan a Team Event

By The Lab2 min read

The short answer

Pickleball is a strong team building activity in Miami: it's easy to learn, social, and mixed abilities can play together. Here's how to plan a team event, from headcount and format to timing around the heat, and how to host one at The Lab. Send an inquiry on /events for details.

Why pickleball works for team building

Most team activities either leave half the group watching or turn into a contest for the two most athletic people. Pickleball avoids both.

  • Easy to learn. The court is small, the paddle is light and the serve is underhand. Beginners can usually start rallying quickly.
  • Social. Doubles puts four people close together, talking between points. It's competitive, but it's hard not to laugh.
  • Mixed abilities can play. A first-timer and a regular can be partners and still have a good game.
  • Everyone plays. With short games and rotations, nobody spends the event on the sidelines.

How to plan a pickleball team event

1. Get a headcount

Start with how many people are coming. It shapes everything else: how many courts you need, how you rotate players and which format fits. Send the number with your inquiry.

2. Pick a format

  • Round robin. Players rotate partners and opponents every game. Great for mixing teams and departments.
  • Mini tournament. Pair people up, play short games, and finish with a final. Good if your group likes a little competition.
  • Open rally time. No scores, just playing. Best for mostly first-timers.

Tip: mix experience levels when you pair people up. It keeps games close and gets people talking to colleagues they don't usually work with.

3. Plan around the Miami heat

The CDC recommends doing outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day or evening. Build in breaks, and make sure everyone has water. Our guide to playing pickleball in the Miami heat has more CDC and National Weather Service guidance.

4. Keep it simple for beginners

Explain three rules and start playing: serve underhand and diagonally, let the ball bounce once on each side before volleying, and stay out of the kitchen (the zone by the net) when you volley. People learn the rest by playing.
