The Third-Shot Drop: When to Use It and How to Practice It in Miami
The short answer
The third shot drop is a soft shot that lands in your opponents' kitchen so your team can move up to the net. Here's when to drop, when to drive, and how to practice it, plus where to practice it in Miami: skill-verified open play at The Lab, 7 days a week.
What is the third shot drop?
The third shot drop is a soft shot hit by the serving team on the third shot of the rally: serve, return, then the drop.
The returning team gets to the kitchen line first. The serving team starts at the baseline. A good drop arcs over the net and lands in the opponents' kitchen, so they have to hit up. That gives you time to move forward and take the net.
It's one of the shots that separates 3.0 games from 4.0 games.
When to drop and when to drive
You don't have to drop every time. Read the return.
| Situation | Better choice |
|---|---|
| Deep return, opponents already at the kitchen line | Drop |
| Short or high return you can attack | Drive |
| Opponents still moving up | Drive at their feet |
| You've been driving and they're ready for it | Drop to change the pace |
A common pattern is the drive, then drop: drive the third shot, and if it comes back soft, drop the fifth shot and move up.
Whichever you choose, don't rush to the net after a bad drop. Stop, split step, and reset from where you are.
How to hit a good drop
- Short, smooth swing. Lift from low to high. Use your legs and shoulders, not your wrist.
- Soft grip. Tight grips send the ball long.
- Aim for the arc. The highest point should be on your side of the net, so the ball drops into the kitchen.
- Watch the ball onto the paddle. Then look up.
- Move after you hit. Take a few steps in, then split step as your opponent makes contact.
How to practice the third shot drop: 4 drills
1. Dink and step back
Start with dinks at the kitchen line. After each few good ones, take a step back and keep hitting soft into the kitchen. Keep going until you're at the baseline. This builds the same touch from farther away.
2. Fed drops from the baseline
Your partner stands at the kitchen line and feeds deep balls. You hit drops from the baseline. Aim for the kitchen, then switch roles. Try to put several in a row in the kitchen before moving on.
3. Drop and move up
Same as drill 2, but after each drop, move forward and stop with a split step. Your partner dinks or blocks the ball back, and you play it out until you reach the kitchen line.
4. Drop or drive
Your partner feeds a mix of deep and short balls without telling you which is coming. Drop the deep ones, drive the short ones. This trains the decision, not just the shot.
Practice it in real games, at your level
Drills build the shot. Games test it. The drop is hard to learn in mixed-level games, where the ball comes back too hard or too easy.
The #1 thing keeping Miami players from playing more? Mixed-level games.
At The Lab Pickleball, open play is skill-verified, 7 days a week, at three levels:
- 3.0–3.6: build a consistent drop.
- 3.7–4.4: use it under pressure, and learn when to drive instead.
- 4.5+ Challenge Court: drops and resets against the best players in the building. Read what the Challenge Court is.
You get rallies against people at your level, which is where the third shot drop actually gets better.
Players come to The Lab from Aventura, Surfside, Doral and Midtown, and from 19 neighborhoods, from Homestead to Fort Lauderdale.

FAQ
What is a third shot drop in pickleball?
It's a soft, arcing shot hit by the serving team on the third shot of the rally. It lands in the opponents' kitchen, so they have to hit up, and it gives your team time to move up to the kitchen line.
When should I drive instead of drop?
Drive when the return is short or high and you can attack it, when your opponents are still moving up, or when you want to change the pace. Drop when the return is deep and your opponents are already at the kitchen line.
Where should a third shot drop land?
In the kitchen, ideally low over the net and toward the backhand of one opponent or the middle. A drop that lands a little short of the kitchen line is still fine if it's low and forces them to hit up.
How do I practice the third shot drop?
Start close to the net and move back: dink, then hit from the transition zone, then from the baseline. Practice with a partner at the kitchen line feeding you, then play it out in real games.
Where can I practice the third shot drop in Miami?
At The Lab Pickleball, skill-verified open play runs 7 days a week at three levels: 3.0–3.6, 3.7–4.4 and the 4.5+ Challenge Court. You practice against players at your level. See the schedule at /schedule.
