What Is a DUPR Ladder League? (Coming Soon to The Lab in Miami)
The short answer
A DUPR ladder league seeds players onto courts by DUPR rating and moves them up or down each week based on results. In The Lab's format, coming soon in Miami, you partner with everyone on your court, games go to a hard 11, players are ranked by points instead of wins, each court crowns a champion, and each week the top finisher moves up a court and the bottom finisher moves down.
What is a ladder league?
A ladder league is a recurring league where players are ranked, and the rankings change based on results. Win and you climb. Struggle and you drop. Over a season, everyone ends up playing people close to their level.
A DUPR ladder league uses DUPR ratings to set the starting order, so week one is already competitive. For a refresher on the rating itself, see how DUPR ratings work.
How does The Lab's DUPR Ladder League work?
The Lab's DUPR Ladder League is coming soon. Here's the format:
- Seeded by DUPR. Players are placed on courts by DUPR rating, with higher-rated players on higher courts.
- Everyone partners with everyone. On your court, you rotate so you play with each other player as your partner.
- Games to a hard 11. No win-by-2. Every game ends at 11.
- Ranked by points, not wins. The points you win across the night decide your finish on the court.
- A champion on every court. Each court has its own winner.
- Move up, move down. Each week, the top finisher on each court moves up a court, and the bottom finisher moves down.

Why points instead of wins?
When you switch partners every game, your win record depends partly on who you were paired with. Points are a fairer measure.
Say you lose a game 10–11 with one partner and win another 11–3. Counting only wins, that's 1–1. Counting points, you scored 21 and gave up 14. Points reward steady play across every game, not just the close ones that fall your way.
Hard 11 keeps it fair too: every game has the same number of points available.
Why does everyone partner with everyone?
Rotating partners does three things:
- It's fair. Nobody gets carried by a strong fixed partner.
- It's social. You play with everyone on your court, not just your usual friends.
- It's honest. Your finish reflects your own game.
How do you move up the ladder?
Finish at the top of your court, and next week you move up a court. Finish at the bottom, and you move down. Everyone else stays put.
Over a season, that creates steady movement. Players who are improving climb, and courts stay competitive because they keep sorting themselves by level.
If you want to climb, the same habits that break a plateau apply: fewer unforced errors, a better soft game, more patience. See stuck at 3.5? How to break a pickleball plateau.
How is a league different from open play?
| Open play | DUPR Ladder League | |
|---|---|---|
| Commitment | Book any session | A recurring league |

Do I need a DUPR rating to join?
Players are seeded by DUPR rating. If you don't have one yet, message us and ask how to get placed.
What does 'hard 11' mean?
Games end at 11 points, with no need to win by 2. An 11–10 game is over.
Why rank by points instead of wins?
Because you change partners every game, wins depend partly on who you're paired with. Points scored across all your games are a fairer measure of how you played.
