How DUPR Ratings Work (and How to Get Rated in Miami)
The short answer
DUPR is a pickleball rating on a 2.0–8.0 scale, calculated from your match results instead of self-assessment. To get rated in Miami, create a DUPR account and play matches that are recorded in DUPR. At The Lab, open play courts are split by DUPR level, and players without a rating join a weekly club rating session to get placed.
What is a DUPR rating?
DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating) is a rating system for pickleball. It puts every player on one scale, from 2.0 to 8.0, so a 3.8 in Miami means roughly the same thing as a 3.8 anywhere else.
The key difference from older systems: DUPR is based on match results, not on how you describe your own game. You don't pick your number. Your results do.
DUPR keeps separate ratings for singles and doubles. Most open play is doubles, so your doubles rating is usually the one that matters for court placement.
How is a DUPR rating calculated?
DUPR doesn't publish every detail of its algorithm, but the basics are public:
- Results count, including the score. According to DUPR, the score of a game matters, not only who won.
- Who you play matters. The ratings of your opponents and your partner are part of the calculation. Beating higher-rated players tends to move you up. Losing to lower-rated players tends to move you down.
- More matches make it more reliable. A rating built on a handful of games is less certain than one built on many.
Because of this, a DUPR rating moves over time. If you improve and keep playing rated matches, your number should follow.
For the latest details, check DUPR's own help pages. They update the system from time to time.
How do you get a DUPR rating in Miami?
The general steps are the same everywhere:
- Create a DUPR account in the DUPR app or on dupr.com.
- Play matches that get recorded in DUPR. Tournaments, leagues and rated club events typically report results.
- Keep playing. Your rating settles as more results come in.
In Miami, whether you play in Doral, Brickell or Aventura, the simplest path is to play somewhere that runs rated events and level-matched play. At The Lab, the DUPR Ladder League is coming soon. Join the waitlist on the leagues page, and read what a DUPR ladder league is for the format.
How does The Lab use DUPR?
The Lab uses DUPR to put you on the right court. Every open play session is DUPR skill-verified, and courts are split into three levels:
| Open play court | Who it's for |
|---|---|
| 3.0–3.6 | Players rated 3.0 to 3.6 |
| 3.7–4.4 | Players rated 3.7 to 4.4, DUPR verified |
| 4.5+ Challenge Court | Players rated 4.5 and up, DUPR verified |
Verification is the point. When everyone on the court is close in level, games stay competitive and you get the rallies that make you better. Open play runs 7 days a week: Monday to Thursday 6–9 PM and Saturday to Sunday 9 AM–12 PM. See the schedule.
What if you don't have a DUPR rating yet?
You can still play. Players without a DUPR rating attend the weekly club rating session first, so the club can place you on the right court. The day and time aren't announced yet, so message us to book your spot, or text the club at (786) 665-2618.
The club rating session places you at The Lab. It's not the same thing as an official DUPR rating. For how the session works, read No DUPR rating yet? How to get placed at The Lab.
What do the numbers actually mean?
A 3.0 and a 4.5 play very different games: shot control, consistency, and how they handle the kitchen line all change as the number goes up. We break that down level by level in what pickleball skill levels mean.
Two tips while your rating settles:
- Don't chase the number. Play opponents at your level or a bit above. That's how ratings, and players, improve.
- Expect it to move. New ratings swing more. That's normal.

FAQ
What is a good DUPR rating?
It depends on your goals. Many recreational players fall somewhere in the 3s and 4s, and ratings in the 5s and above usually belong to advanced and professional players. The best rating is an accurate one, because it puts you in games at your level.
Can I get a DUPR rating from open play?
A DUPR rating comes from matches recorded in DUPR, such as tournaments, leagues and other rated events. Ask the club which events at The Lab are rated.
Do I need a DUPR rating to play at The Lab?
No. If you don't have one, join the weekly club rating session first so we can place you on the right court. Message us to book.
Are singles and doubles rated separately?
Yes. DUPR keeps separate singles and doubles ratings, so your doubles rating only reflects doubles results.
