No DUPR Rating Yet? How to Get Placed at The Lab in Miami
The short answer
You can play at The Lab without a DUPR rating. Players without one attend a weekly club rating session first, so the club can place you on the right open play court (3.0–3.6, 3.7–4.4 or 4.5+). The day and time aren't announced yet, so message us to book your spot.
Can you play at The Lab without a DUPR rating?
Yes. A DUPR rating is the fastest way onto the right court, but it isn't required.
Open play at The Lab is DUPR skill-verified. Courts are split into three levels: 3.0–3.6, 3.7–4.4 and the 4.5+ Challenge Court. If you don't have a rating, the club needs another way to know where you fit. That's what the weekly club rating session is for.
What is the weekly club rating session?
It's a session for players without a DUPR rating, run by the club each week. Its job is simple: place you on the right open play court before you start booking sessions.
Why it matters:
- Your games stay competitive. You're not stuck on a court that's too easy or too hard.
- Everyone else's games stay competitive. Level-matched courts only work if everyone on them is at that level.
- You start improving sooner. The fastest way to get better is steady play with people at your level or a bit above.
The day and time of the session aren't announced yet, so message us to book.
Who is the club rating session for?
Anyone who wants to play open play at The Lab and doesn't have a DUPR rating yet. That usually includes:
- Newer players who have only played casually.
- Tennis, padel or racquetball players picking up pickleball.
- Experienced players who never got rated, because their usual spot never asked.
- Visitors and snowbirds spending time in Miami. See a snowbird's guide to pickleball in Miami.
How do you book the club rating session in Miami?

What should you bring?

Should you still get an official DUPR rating?
If you want to play rated events, yes. A club placement tells us which court you belong on at The Lab. A DUPR rating follows you to tournaments, leagues and other clubs.
Getting one is a separate step: create a DUPR account and play matches that are recorded in DUPR. We explain how the system works in how DUPR ratings work. The Lab's DUPR Ladder League is coming soon too. Join the waitlist on the leagues page.
How do you know which level you are now?
You don't need to guess before the session, but it helps to know what each level usually looks like. Read what pickleball skill levels mean for a plain-English breakdown of 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5+.
