A Snowbird's Guide to Pickleball in Miami

By The Lab3 min read

The short answer

Spending the winter in Miami? At The Lab you can play level-matched open play 7 days a week. For a season of regular play, founding membership ($99/month, first 50 members) is usually the best value; three sessions a week would cost about $234 a month in $18 drop-ins. Get placed in your first week, then build a weekly routine.

Can snowbirds play pickleball in Miami without joining a club?

Yes. At The Lab you can play the whole season without a membership: create a free member account and drop in for $18 a session. But if you'll play several times a week, membership usually costs less. More on that below.

The Lab is at 1255 NW 135th St, North Miami, FL 33168, with free on-site parking. If you're wintering in Aventura, Sunny Isles Beach or Bal Harbour, it's roughly 7–9 miles by road, based on the approximate distances on our visiting Miami page. Driving time depends on traffic.

What's the best pass for a Miami winter season?

It depends on how often you'll play. Here's a typical snowbird week, priced per month:

Plan ~Sessions per month Drop-ins ($18) 10-packs ($15 each) Founding membership
2× a week ~8 ~$144 ~$120 $99
3× a week ~13 ~$234 ~$195 $99
4× a week ~17 ~$306 ~$255 $99

The 10-pack is $150 for 10 sessions, valid for 60 days, for free members. Founding membership is $99/month for the first 50 members, then $139/month. Members play unlimited, and Friday Socials are included.

For the full breakdown, including lighter schedules, read drop-in or membership: what's cheaper. Check membership terms on the membership page before you sign up.

How do you get placed on the right court?

Do this in your first week, so the rest of the season runs smoothly.

  • Have a DUPR rating? Bring it. DUPR is one scale everywhere, so your number from back home puts you on the right court.
  • No rating? Attend the weekly club rating session first. The day and time aren't announced yet, so message us before you arrive to book a spot.

Courts are split into 3.0–3.6, 3.7–4.4 and the 4.5+ Challenge Court, and every session is DUPR skill-verified. New to the numbers? Read what pickleball skill levels mean.

What does a weekly pickleball routine look like in Miami?

Open play runs 7 days a week:

Day Open play
Monday–Thursday 6–9 PM
Friday Friday Socials (times coming soon)
Saturday–Sunday 9 AM–12 PM

A simple season routine:

  • Two weeknights, for steady reps after dinner.
  • One weekend morning, for a longer session before the day warms up.
  • Friday Socials, once times are announced, to meet people.

There's no waiting between games, and you play 2+ hours nonstop. Book everything on Playbypoint and check the schedule for updates.

How do you improve over a whole season?

A few months of regular, level-matched play adds up. A season can be long enough to move up a court.

  • Play at your level or a bit above. That's what the court split is for.
  • Take a private lesson early. Lessons with JC (Juan Carlos Saez), The Lab's leader and a former professional player, are booked by text or WhatsApp. See coaching. Group clinics are coming soon.
  • Track your progress. If you play DUPR-rated matches, your rating should reflect your progress.
  • Join the league when it launches. The DUPR Ladder League is coming soon. Get on the waitlist at leagues, and read what a DUPR ladder league is.

Do you need to fly in with your gear?

Bring your shoes. Paddles are optional.

The pro shop carries top brands like RPM and Joola, with paddle rentals and demo paddles. If you're thinking about a new paddle anyway, demo a few during your first weeks. See how to choose a pickleball paddle.

Light snacks and drinks are available at the club.

What about friends visiting for a week?

Send them the short version: playing pickleball on vacation in Miami. They can drop in for $18 without a membership, rent a paddle and play at their level. Whether they're staying in Surfside or North Beach, they can book on Playbypoint before they land.
